Colorbond
Low maintenance. Solid steel with full privacy and no painting, ever. On the downside, there are fewer looks to choose from, it can dent and the panels get hot in summer.
Aluminium Slat
Looks the part. A modern, rust-proof finish that suits renovated fronts. Expect to pay more than Colorbond, and the gaps mean a touch less privacy.
Timber
Warm and natural. Simple to patch up, but timber needs staining every couple of years and can rot or attract termites. A lot of the original timber fences in the suburb are reaching the end of their life.
On larger areas, chainwire or security fencing is the cheapest option, though it offers no privacy at all.

Sloping yards, narrow side access and big established gardens add labour, and a few blocks need retaining walls first.
Old Fence Removal
Some fences from the 1970s and 80s are fibro, which may contain asbestos. SafeWork SA says a licensed removalist must take it away, and we’ll point it out at the measure-up.

Do I need council approval to build a fence in Noarlunga Downs?
Usually not. The City of Onkaparinga says Colorbond fences up to 2.1 metres high don’t need approval in general residential areas. Fences within 6 metres of a corner where two roads meet must stay under 1 metre, and anything over the limits needs a development application.
Can you replace an original 1970s fence?
Yes, it’s one of our most common jobs here. We take out tired timber, fibro or iron fences and put in new Colorbond. If an old fence might contain asbestos, we’ll let you know so it can be removed safely first.
How long does a fence take to install?
Most standard boundary fences take one to two days on site. We’ll give you a firm timeframe after the measure-up.
How much does Colorbond fencing cost?
Usually $200 to $300 per metre, depending on height, colour and access. Your neighbour may share the cost.

Is Colorbond or aluminium slat fencing better?
Colorbond is solid, private and low maintenance. Aluminium slats look more modern and let light through, with a little less privacy. Many homes use slats at the front and Colorbond down the sides and back.
When is the best time of year to install a fence?
Autumn and spring work best, with easier digging and good conditions for concrete. We install all year, but booking before summer helps you avoid the rush.
What types of pool fencing can I choose from?
The most common are frameless glass, semi-frameless glass, aluminium tubular and aluminium slat. Every pool fence in South Australia must meet AS 1926.1, so check the SA Government pool and spa safety rules before you begin.
