Here’s a straightforward look at the pros and cons of each option.
Colorbond
Strong, private and low maintenance. It stands up to wind and needs no painting. The trade-offs are limited styles, panels that can dent and surfaces that get hot in summer.
Aluminium Slat
Modern, with a lighter look. It won’t rust and lets some light and breeze through. It costs more than Colorbond and gives less privacy.
Timber
Natural and easy to patch. It blends with the bush setting, but needs regular staining and is more likely to rot or attract termites. Many owners replace old timber with Colorbond.
On large bush blocks, chainwire or security fencing is the cheapest option, but it provides no privacy.

Steep Ground and Access
Stepping panels down a hill, working around tree roots and carrying materials up steep paths all add time, and some blocks need retaining walls first.
Old Fence Removal
Fibro fences from the 60s, 70s and 80s can contain asbestos, and SafeWork SA rules say a licensed removalist must take it away. We’ll check for this at the measure-up.

Will I need council approval for a fence in Flagstaff Hill?
Usually not. Flagstaff Hill is in the City of Onkaparinga, where Colorbond fences up to 2.1 metres high are exempt in general residential areas. Fences within 6 metres of a corner where two roads meet must stay under 1 metre, and anything over the limits needs a development application.
How do you build a fence on a steep slope?
We either step the panels down in level sections or rake them to follow the ground, depending on the slope and the look you want. If the soil needs holding back, we’ll let you know a retaining wall is needed first.
How long does fence installation take?
A standard boundary fence usually takes one to two days on site. Steep blocks can take a bit longer, and we’ll confirm timing after the measure-up.

Colorbond gives full privacy and almost no upkeep. Aluminium slats look more modern and let light through, which can suit spots where you want to keep part of the view. Many homes use both.
When's the best time to install a fence?
Autumn and spring are ideal, when the ground is easier to dig and concrete cures well. We install all year, but booking before summer helps you avoid the busy season.
What types of pool fencing are available in Australia?
